Zdá se to jako joke, ale jde o skutečnost. Evropská verze Windows 7 skutečně nebude obsahovat Internet Explorer. Což pro evropské zákazníky kupující si tuto verzi OS znamená, že si budou muset stáhnout a nainstalovat webový browser sami, dle svých potřeb a požadavků. Za tímto rozhodnutím stojí dlouho táhnoucí se spor mezi Microsoftem a evropským úřadem dohlížejícím na konkurenční boj. Znamená to pravděpodobně jediné a to zvýšení podílu konkurenčních webových prohlížečů, což je konečně velkým krokem kupředu.
Toto rozhodnutí Microsoftu je reakcí na rok 2008, kdy mu byla udělena pokuta od Evropské unie ve výši 899 milionů euro za nekalou soutěž, které se Microsoft dopustil tím, že v OS Windows již byl zabudován webový prohlížeč a přehrávač hudby.
I nadále však probíhají jednání Microsoftu s úřady evropské unie. Pokud mezi nimi nedojde k dohodě do 22. října, kdy tento OS celosvětově vychází, bude tedy zřejmě evropská verze Windows 7 bez Internet Exploreru neboť Microsoft rozhodně nechce, aby Win 7 vyšly v Evropě později.
